Departing Coast Guard Station New London commander committed to her crew


New London — In a ceremony on Wednesday, Lt. Nina McDonald yielded command of Coast Guard Station New London to Lt. Robert Garris.

She was recognized for caring for her crew and enhancing relationships with other port and law enforcement officials.

McDonald earned with the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, which recognizes heroism or admirable service. Her leadership led to 301 search and rescue cases, which saved 348 lives and preserved $5.6 million of property. She also led a law enforcement training on how to safely and quickly respond to an active shooter.
