The Owen J. Roberts High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps unit was recognized as the most enhanced unit of 583 high school Navy programs in the United States and across the border.
The school’s program was selected for the recognition by a committee mainly working from the U.S. Naval Reserves Training Corps in Pensacola, Florida. The award was bestowed six years after Owen J. Roberts program almost shut down due to a lack of students.
Master Gunnery Sgt. Andrew J. Worley began a project in 2011 to restore the program, which had diminishing enrollments. Worley collaborated with retired Cpt. Craig Armstrong on carrying out new management programs and drill tournaments.
Since then, approximately 100 cadets every year have enlisted into the junior Navy program, which provides opportunities for college scholarships, as well as credits for college.
